Be Impeccable With Your Words
Aug 05, 2024Over the years, I have learned many things that have helped to transform the woman that I am, and to serve as a guide to decondition learned behaviors that no longer serve me.
The world, if you let it, will tell you all of the things they think you should be; how to dress, how to talk, what's good for you, what's not good for you, if you're good enough, definitely if you're not good enough, and on and on and on. Over time, you start to drift away from how you were meant to be, the true essence of yourself. All the while, you may know exactly who you are supposed to be, what your purpose is, and still the tides pull you away from who you really are.
Don't feel guilty. Don't stress. It is 100% possible for you to make your way back to all of the things that fill your cup and make you happy. You will have joy in your life, and all the magic that you are is going to come back.
So How Do You Get back To You?
That is an excellent question. Today we are going to cover the first part of an amazing resource. The Four Agreements book by Don Miguel Ruiz covers four different agreements. The first agreement is to Be Impeccable With Your Words. What it means to be impeccable with your words is that you only say what you mean.
"Your word" and even "What you say" is a little bit more broad than you might think, so let's break that down. Your word can be the words that come out of your mouth, the thoughts that go through your head, the things you text others, things you journal, emails you send, any words that you use to understand your world. What you say, is just what comes out of your mouth. If you aren't being impeccable with your thoughts, ie; what you say to yourself, eventually those thoughts will come out of your mouth. The thought itself has energy behind it. When you vocalize it, it just gains more power, more steam.
Why is it so important to be impeccable with your word?
Knowing that you words carry energy, it's so important to be impeccable. I'm no scientist, but I know like attracts like. You have seen the way a magnet sticks to your fridge right? Like attracts like. That means that when you let your words drift to things like..
My life is so hard
I can't do anything right
I shouldn't even try
What if I'm not good enough
or any other complaining, criticizing, concern, commiserating, and catastrophizing
You are literally asking to have more of those things in your life.
On to happier things, let's talk about what to do when you notice your words drifting.
There are three C's to turning your ship around Catch It, Check It, Change It.
Catch it: What is the thought behind it? Does it feel heavy or light, right or wrong?
Check it: Is the the thought helpful, and is it accurate?
Change it: What is a more accurate thought?
While this sounds easy, it can take some practice so give yourself grace. Every time you catch a word or thought that isn't helpful, that's a win. Every time you replace your thought with something accurate, you are literally re-writing your story and changing the energy of things that are pulled to you. I do have to warn you, it can be addicting once things really start to shift and you see the positive impacts show up in your life.
If you're looking for examples for ways you can be impeccable with your words today, I've got you!
- Don't over promise.
- Don't change the truth.
- Do what you say will do.
- Speak about others as if they're in the room.
Let's Wrap This UP
Your words carry energy. You have the power to create your world using your words. If you "catch" yourself drifting and not being impeccable, "check" to see if your thoughts are helpful AND accurate. Have fun changing your words to something that is more aligned to the world you want to live in.
